Artist calls for Blackpool seafront sculpture to be removed

An artist is calling for his sculpture to be removed from Blackpool seafront because it is decaying.

Liam Curtin claims his piece High Tide Organ has never been properly maintained since it was installed near South Pier in 2002.

Mr Curtin, who also created the Meccano Bridge in Bolton, said his Blackpool work was only meant to be in place for 12 years.

Blackpool Council has been contacted for a comment.

The 50ft (15m) artwork uses wave energy to force water up into large organ pipes to create a sound that is tuned to B flat.

Nigeria's government has told the country's mobile phone networks to block access to Twitter, a statement from the industry umbrella body said. Phone users are reporting difficulties in accessing the site. It is still available through some wi-fi networks. This comes after the government said it was suspending Twitter operations in the country "indefinitely". It alleged the site was being used to undermine "Nigeria's corporate existence". Twitter has called the ban "deeply concerning". Paloma had just cobbled together enough money for a clandestine abortion when the coronavirus pandemic shuttered much of Brazil. The 27-year-old had been raped late last year by an ex-boyfriend who remained a close family friend. The mother of two found out she was pregnant a few weeks later, after moving from her native Bahia to Minas Gerais, a nearby state, for work. "I didn't know what to do," recalls Paloma. "The only thing I was certain of was that I didn't want this child." Brazil has strict laws on abortion. Terminations are only allowed in cases of rape, when the mother's life is at risk or when the foetus has the defect anencephaly - a rare condition that prevents part of the brain and skull from developing.
